The Swiss Embassy in Tokyo continues its tradition of hosting an annual meeting of the ISC St. Gallen Club of Japan. The 10th anniversary of this event was hosted by the president of the club, Professor Toyoo Gyohten together with His Excellency Urs Bucher, Swiss Ambassador to Japan.
The former President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Jean-Claude Trichet, is the first of two guests the respected BBC HARDtalk presenter Stephen Sackur will host in his One-on-One conversations at the St. Gallen Symposium.
John Petersen, Founder and President of The Arlington Institute and world-renowned futurist will hold a Work Session entitled “Anticipating big wild cards: How I designed the world’s first surprise anticipation centre . . . and what are the big events that are looming on our horizon that could fundamentally change how we live” at the 42nd St. Gallen Symposium.
On 3 April 2012, the St. Gallen Symposium will hold its 3rd St. Gallen Symposium Beijing Reception at the Swiss Embassy in Beijing. Thought leaders from business and academia will meet Leaders of Tomorrow from Beijing’s top universities to discuss the emerging risks from China’s economic growth model.

In addition to our continuously growing list of speakers of the 42nd St. Gallen Symposium, another list has been published featuring the Topic Leaders, who have distinctive knowledge and a strong connection to this year’s topic and therefore ensure vibrant discussions. They cover an important role in the symposium’s programme since they are the ones guiding the dialogue between the Leaders of Today and the Leaders of Tomorrow and therefore bridging generations.

Michel Liès has been appointed Group Chief Executive Officer of Swiss Re. He is going to take up the post by February 2012. As speaker at the 41st St. Gallen Symposium, Michel Liès gave interesting insights into the new challenges in the insurance business and proposed public private partnerships to cope with the upcoming problems in a world that is dominated by risk. The International Students’ Committee (ISC) is glad to count on Swiss Re as one of the Main Partners of the St. Gallen Symposium.

In just 17 days, on 1 February 2012 the window for applying for a participation as a Leader of Tomorrow in the 42nd St. Gallen Symposium closes. The upcoming two and a half weeks offer students from all around the world the final chance to contribute their own perspective on “Facing Risk” and thereby qualify as a Leader of Tomorrow for the upcoming symposium.
The era of hyper volatility has been the unravelling story of geopolitics and the economy in recent times. How will the economies and societies of Asia adapt to these new trends? What outcome do those trends have on smaller societies such as Singapore?
Just on time for Christmas, the first three articles have been uploaded on the St. Gallen Symposium’s blog: Debate. Debate will display a new perspective on the topic “Facing Risk”. With their contributions, the authors illustrate new insights in various sectors and spheres of activities. Our authors are decision makers of today as well as Leaders of Tomorrow. This fact provides a diversity in the opinions and specifications of the contributions. Debate allows the reader to further tackle with the subject and its sheer endless diversity before the symposium starts in May 2012.
The Holiday Season is upon us and we find ourselves reflecting on the past year: What were my major achievements? What were the goals I wanted to strive for? These kinds of questions arise when the year is drawing to an end: A year that was full of influential world events. The new year is about to begin and we are looking forward to the near future and eventually, to the 42nd St. Gallen Symposium. In this respect, we wish a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.

For the first time since resigning as CEO from UBS AG, Oswald Grübel will make a public appearance on Tuesday, 29 November 2011. He will discuss the controversial question “Is Switzerland’s prosperity at risk?” together with Prof. Monika Bütler, Professor at the University of St. Gallen, and Dr Gerhard Schwarz, Director of Avenir Suisse, in a panel discussion organised by the International Students’ Committee (ISC). Yesterday, 80 students and thought leaders attended the first Special St. Gallen Symposium Event which was held under the topic “Facing Risk: Singapore & Asia in the New Order of Global Hyper Volatility” at the University Town Auditorium of the National University of Singapore (NUS).
Every year, the essay competition for the St. Gallen Wings of Excellence Award offers graduate and postgraduate university students throughout the world the unique opportunity to participate in the St. Gallen Symposium. For the fifth time since 2007, students and young professionals from Singapore who attended the St. Gallen Symposium as “Leaders of Tomorrow” relived the spirit of the symposium in an exclusive gathering at the Tanglin Club in Singapore. This meeting was also joined by distinguished members of the symposium community from Singapore, such as the Ambassador of Switzerland to Singapore, Mr Joerg Reding.
With the beginning of the current term the newly formed 42nd International Students’ Committee (ISC) started working with all its commitment to organise the 42nd St. Gallen Symposium. For over a week they have immersed themselves in the essentials of their tasks: All members of the committee got familiar with their responsibilities, participated in schoolings and launched their first projects.
The 42nd St. Gallen Symposium (3–4 May 2012) will be under the topic “Facing Risk”. With its unequivocal connection to the world of business, this topic addresses the basic human condition of living in a world dominated by risk.
Christine Lagarde has been appointed Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). As a longstanding member of the St. Gallen Symposium’s faculty, Ms. Lagarde has contributed significantly to the debates on global issues at no less than eight symposia since 2002.

Victor Chu, Advisor to the Leaders of Tomorrow Knowledge Pool of the St. Gallen Symposium, will be awarded a Global Economy Prize on 19 June 2011. The prize is bestowed annually by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the City of Kiel.
For the second time, the top essays to the St. Gallen Wings of Excellence Award have been reviewed. The Essay Review reveals the most interesting thoughts, perspectives and ideas on the three competition subtopics “Justice and Power”, “Rethinking Leadership” and “Public Goods and Values”.
The 41st St. Gallen Symposium ends with the traditional International Buffet. These “3 Days in May” were marked by intense discussions and a unique atmosphere which will stay in memory for a long time.

Combined with articles on current global matters, the participants gained insight on the most relevant issues of the day.

Three out of hundreds of competitors convinced the jury of their ability to address the topic “Just Power” in a most inspiring way. The 41st St. Gallen Symposium started with an inspiring morning. The first panel discussion was closed by the remarks of Oswald Grübel, Group Chief Executive of UBS AG.
On the morning of the 12th May, 600 leaders from business, science, politics and society came together with 200 outstanding students and young talents from all over the world to discuss this year’s topic “Just Power”.
Each year, the programme for the Leaders of Tomorrow already starts two days prior to the symposium. During the Pre-Programme the Leaders of Tomorrow meet and discuss with each other. The aim of the Pre-Programme is to give them the opportunity to exchange their thoughts on the topic and to get prepared for the debates with the Leaders of Today.
In cooperation with its Main Partner Credit Suisse, the St. Gallen Symposium’s Leaders of Tomorrow are surveyed on a yearly basis. With McKinsey’s head Dominic Barton and the researcher in peace and conflict studies, Prof. Johan Galtung, the St. Gallen Symposium is going to make two extraordinary sessions available to the public. Every year, a picture visualises the topic of the St. Gallen Symposium. As the topic of the upcoming is “Just Power” the motive of a pier was chosen. The mightful construction of a bridge allegorises the topic “Just Power” in many aspects.
On 25 November 2010, the Swiss Embassy in Tokyo hosted a special reception dedicated to the St. Gallen Symposium.
Starting from a long standing partnership, two members of the International Students’ Committee (ISC) had the opportunity to attend the Business Today Conference in New York, from 21–23 November 2010.

On the 8 November 2010, the St. Gallen Symposium in cooperation with the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) for the first time held a Leaders of Tomorrow conference in Abu Dhabi.
Upcoming week, two conferences organised by the St. Gallen Symposium for the Leaders of Tomorrow, one in Abu Dhabi and one in Moscow, will take place in order to foster the intergenerational dialogue and to face actual problems.

The 41st ISC-Team spent the weekend from 15–17 October 2010 at the “Unternehmerforum Lilienberg” in Ermatingen, where the traditional training at the end of the orientation phase took place.
